Scholten, V., van der Duin, P., and Hartmann, D. (2015), Responsible Innovation and Education: Teaching a Responsibility Perspective in Technology Courses. Policy Recommendations and Insights, KARIM project.

Based on the research conducted as part of the KARIM-project (Knowledge Acceleration Responsible Innovation meta-Network) we identified a variety of insights and instruments that can help local and regional policymakers to develop instruments that contribute to obtaining higher levels of Responsible Innovation among SMEs and research institutes. In the present guiding document we draw on literature and policy briefings and interviews with a variety of policy makers, entrepreneurs in SMEs and officers in research institutes across North-West Europe.

In the present guiding document we provide insights and policy recommendations for program managers of education programs that aim at engineers at academic level. We identified the conditions when developing a stronger awareness about the benefits of a Responsible Innovation orientation among engineers is important and how it can be implemented in existing teaching programs and courses. We will make suggestion how to incorporate the concept of Responsible Innovation within research and teaching programs at the bachelor and master level and also for executive teaching. We also discuss the importance of creating inspirations and awareness for the concepts in a broader setting to support the interest in mainstream education.
