Engage2020 project
The Engage2020 Consortium has created the Action Catalogue, a decision support tool that helps researchers, decision makers and others wanting to conduct inclusive research find the participatory methods best suited to their specific needs. To develop the catalogue, the project partners reviewed and mapped societal engagement methods and tools currently used for research and innovation in Europe and beyond. The catalogue has an intuitive search interface and contains 57 public engagement methods, with elaborate descriptions and useful tools to help current and potential users of engagement practices understand which methods will best fit different contexts.

The methods and tools are mapped against a set of four criteria:

  • application level of the method/tool (policy formulation, programme development, project definition, research activity)
  • societal groups involved in the application
  • public involvement level of the societal groups
  • grand societal challenge addressed.

Each method and tool are clearly described through a factsheet (2–3 pages) containing the specific requirements for its application and examples of its use, as well as additional relevant information.

The Engage2020 Action Catalogue is more useful than other public engagement catalogues because of its comprehensiveness and selection process. Over 200 methods and tools were collected via an online survey distributed among the project partners’ contact networks, out of which 57 were chosen for the catalogue. As a result the catalogue offers an up-to-date selection of the most beneficial engagement methods, organized in a user-friendly, practical collection of concise factsheets that can guide methodological choices in research design.
