This paper reviews the conceptions of public engagement in Science and Society (FP6) and Science in Society (FP7) as contributions to RRI. It also considers its role in H2020 Science with and for society framework, pointing out where there is room for improvement. The paper includes a compilation of FP6 and FP7 projects with a strong public engagement component.
